If you believe that morality is a harm-reduction algorithm, you will likely support animal welfare—striving to make the inevitable suffering inflicted by modern society as painless as possible. If you believe that morality is a boundary of inviolable rights, you will support animal rights—refusing to calculate the "humane" dose of suffering. Regardless of which camp one inhabits, the status quo of industrial exploitation is increasingly untenable. The arc of moral evolution, slow and contested as it is, bends away from arbitrary cruelty. In the future, humanity will look back at factory farms not as a necessity of commerce, but as a moral atrocity. The only question remaining is whether we will dismantle the cage from the inside through welfare, or break it entirely through rights.
