The plot follows Marty the zebra, who dreams of escaping the Central Park Zoo to explore the wild. On his tenth birthday, he flees to Grand Central Station. His friends Alex, Melman, and Gloria pursue him but are captured, tranquilized, and shipped to Kenya. After a crate accident orchestrated by the penguins (Skipper, Kowalski, Rico, Private), the four main characters wash ashore on the island of Madagascar.
