Tarzan, which means "white skin" in the native African language, is a fictional character created by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912. The story begins with John Clayton, a British nobleman, who is shipwrecked in the African jungle with his wife. After his parents' death, a she-gorilla named Kala finds and adopts the young boy, naming him Tarzan.
