She walked out of the trailer, the USB stick heavy in her pocket. She knew the truth. The software giants had built fortresses around their code, demanding tribute for every door they opened. But somewhere, a quiet rebellion was spreading. A full-featured CAD program that lived on a $7 piece of plastic. No cloud. No subscription. No permission asked.

People found the bridge within a week. Small groups at first — scavengers, academic kids, a woman with a stroller whose feet had known the Old Quarter's brickwork for decades. A group of students reverse-engineered one of the Portable's blueprints and posted a simplified version online, and soon other neighborhoods built their own small spans in places the city planners had deemed unimportant.
