So Alex did what any sensible engineer would do: went to Cisco’s support site, logged in with a valid SmartNet contract (barely active, but active), navigated to “Downloads” → “Wireless” → “2504” → selected the AIREOS image.

You will see a progress bar. If it freezes at Receiving image... , your FTP server is blocking passive mode. Allow ports 50000-51000 on your FTP server firewall.
After the firmware upgrade is complete, verify that the new firmware version is running on the WLC 2504:
